Betsy Devos, President Trump’s confirmed pick to be our nation’s Secretary of Education, is an advocate of education reform and a long-time philanthropist.
She has spent the past three decades working to shape educational policies. Specifically, she has worked on educational reforms designed to target underserved students of all ages gain access to a quality education. After sending her own children through private school, Devos came to the realization that not every family has the capability or financial means of sending their children to any school of their choosing. As a result, she has worked tirelessly to make sure that all children are afforded equal access to a quality education, regardless of income, socioeconomic status, or where they live. She has worked closely with parents regarding school choice options, and has worked to support the creation of educational choices in 25 states and in the District of Columbia. She has worked to make new educational choices a reality through tax credits and vouchers. In 1993, she and her husband philanthropist Dick DeVos, helped to pass Michigan’s first charter school bill. Read her interview with Philantrophy Table.
Prior to her newest role as Secretary of Education, DeVos spent 15 years in the Grand Rapids (Michigan) Public Schools, where she volunteered her time as an in-school mentor for at-risk kids. Her time spent there further shaped her views on education reform. Betsy DeVos served as chairperson of The Windquest Group, an investment and management firm, with a focus on investing in technology. She has served on the boards of many charitable and civics organizations including the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, Kids Hope USA, Mars Hill Bible Church, and Kendall College of Art and Design. She’s chairperson of the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, and she and her husband support Potter House Christian School, the school where her own children received their educations. They have gone so far as to help pay for the educations of past students who couldn’t otherwise afford the school’s tuition. Her passion within the educational choice movement propelled her help found The American Federation for Children which is affiliated with the Alliance for School Choice. As a result of her efforts over the past several years, several states such as Florida, Louisiana, and Indiana have made great strides when it comes to educational choice. Tens of thousands of students within these states and others are now able to attend the school of their family’s choosing.
